2019 AustCover Young Landcare Leadership Award – SA
Saskia Gerhardy YACCA
YACCA is an environmental youth group that encourages and supports young people to actively engage in environmental projects in their local area. The premise of YACCA is to give young people an opportunity to become environmental leaders in their community. This means providing opportunities for them to voice their concerns in their community and work out how they, as young people, can take real world action. This has resulted in numerous projects that YACCA members have developed and carried out in their community.
YACCA has worked particularly closely with the local council on natural areas within the community, where YACCA has created proposals for butterfly gardens, nature play spaces and revegetation of creeklines. With the help of council all these projects have been carried out by YACCA. Further examples include when a number of members were concerned about roaming cats in the district and the impact that this had on native fauna. The members researched this issue further and created a presentation to highlight the issue. The members then organised a meeting to deliver their concerns to the deputy mayor, who asked to present a deputation to Council. Council is now considering YACCA’s proposal.
