King Island Natural Resource Management
The King Island Natural Resource Management Group (KINRMG) has been operating since 1997. Their mission is to promote co-ordinated and integrated management of natural resources which will contribute to the environmental, social and economic sustainability of King Island.
Back in 2010 the Currie Wharf precinct was recognised by King Island Natural Resource Management Group as a highly utilised and culturally significant area with substantial weed incursions, particularly Boxthorn, but also including Boneseed, Asparagus fern and Bridal Creeper, and very little environmental management in place. The 32Ha site of mostly bush required significant rehabilitation, which was not going to be an easy task due to the nature of the steep terrain and the denseness of the boxthorn.
As the project has evolved over the years the Currie Wharf bush restoration project has changed the landscape of the Wharf precinct. Large scale excavation removal of boxthorn has occurred during two separate stages, each followed-up with immediate large-scale native planting by community and primary school volunteers on the exposed slopes. Native seedlings especially suited to the harsh coastal site and sourced from King Island have been planted and cared for; watered during drought and kept free of invasive weeds to enable them to thrive. The second excavation stage also provided KINRMG with the opportunity to re-establish an historic walking track which had long been lost to boxthorn. The track connects the harbour directly to the museum and lighthouse and is now a well-used access for site-seers and locals.
