2019 Australian Community Media Landcare Community Group Award – VIC
Malmsbury District Landcare Group
“To be nominated, we were delighted with the honour, but to win was completely unexpected. And we are very happy to be in that position. But we don’t want to think this is the peak of the group. It reaffirms that we’re on the right path. We have over 100 individual members and if this inspires and encourages them to keep promoting the Landcare message, it’s a wonderful outcome.” – John Walter, president of Malmsbury District Landcare Group
Since 2009, the Malmsbury District Landcare Group has planted over 26,000 indigenous trees and shrubs and secured $200,000 in grant funding. It always has projects on the go that are open to the community, keeping Landcare principles alive in the public eye. While the central focus of group work has been the control of gorse in target areas with the assistance of the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA), recent activities include revegetation and protection of flora and fauna. The Landcare Group covers land in the Hepburn, Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander Shires and is an active member of the Upper Campaspe Landcare Network (UCLN).
