2019 Coastcare Award – SA
Taperoo Dunes Group
“The Taperoo Dunes Group are thrilled to have won the SA Virgin Coastcare awards in recognition of our work. We hope that our work restoring the Dunes is an inspiration for other local voluntary coastcare groups, and provides encouragement for community members who are thinking of joining landcare or coastcare groups” – Melanie Little, Taperoo Dunes Group
Taperoo Dunes Coast Care volunteers work along the unique Taperoo Dunes – weeding, planting native plants, collecting rubbish, and documenting birds, native plants and animals. The Taperoo Dunes consists of wide coastal dunes and woodlands – unique to metropolitan Adelaide. Working for 4 years between Strathfield and Wandana Terrace at Taperoo, group members, aged between 40-80 years, meet every Monday morning, embodying the true spirit of Coastcare. Work by the Taperoo Dunes group has dramatically reduced the number of weeds throughout the area and there is evidence of natives germinating spontaneously in the cleared areas.
