2019 Indigenous Land Management Award – NT
Thamarrurr Rangers
Based at Wadeye community near the NT/WA border, Thamarrurr Rangers was established by Traditional Owners of the Thamarrurr Region over 15 years ago, to address natural and cultural resource management across the Region. The Rangers continue to be guided by Traditional Owners through Thamarrurr Development Corporation’s (TDC) Board of Management, representing the 20 clan groups in the Region, and through regular meetings with Traditional Owners.
Thamarrurr Rangers work across more than 18,000 km2 of country and 240 km of NT coastline stretching from Cape Scott to the Fitzmaurice River, actively engaging with Traditional Owners and Community members to look after country, address community needs and deliver a sustainable service. Whilst they have been the main organisation looking after country and leading the way in natural and cultural management in this Region, the Rangers also collaborate with some of the smaller neighbouring ranger groups and other stakeholders across the western top end of the Northern Territory.
