Forest Crescent Primary School

“Forest Crescent Primary School is honoured to win the Woolworths Junior Landcare Award for the WA Landcare Awards. Our school community is focussed on sustainability and the award recognises the student’s passion to improve the environment by being involved in several Tree Planting programs throughout the year to increase animal habitat and redress Wheatbelt salinity problems. Student’s knowledge and understanding was also enhanced by learning to Care for Country through participation in the Two Knowledges Walk with an Indigenous Elder and European Ecologist and Zoologist.” Andrew Holmes, Principal Forest Crescent Primary School and WA Woolworths Junior Landcare Team Award Finalist.

Forest Crescent Primary School students work together to help coastal and rural communities to rehabilitate ecosystems in consultation with experts, landowners and Noongar people.

Since 2010, Forest Crescent Primary School has been working towards becoming a more sustainable school by embedding sustainability programs including recycling and water conservation projects, worm-farming, energy saving, and the use of solar power within the daily running of the school. Programs have since expanded to include the construction of an Indigenous ‘6 seasons garden’, frog bog and vegetable garden.

Since 2018, the school has planted approx. 20000 (to date) native seedlings to combat over clearing and salinity and to rehabilitate a wetland ecosystem. These recent planting projects have also helped to educate the students about Noongar knowledge of the land and Indigenous history, and developed ecology and sustainable practices through the ‘Two Knowledges’ bush walk.
