2019 Woolworths Junior Landcare Team Award – NSW

Megalong Public School

“The students of Megalong Public School had a wonderful time visiting Broken Hill. The wonderful learning excursion offered them an insight, not only into Landcare within their own area, but into life in the outback. The journey highlighted the flora and fauna along the Darling and Murray River, and the students learnt about regeneration and protection of flora and fauna at the Living Desert Sanctuary and Yanga National Park. We visited and learnt about how outback schools and towns care for each other, and the environment. Visiting School of the Air, and Royal Flying Doctor Service and Hermidale Public School. What a lovely reward and incentive to work towards the National 2020 Landcare Award in November.” – Stephanie Scott, Principal Megalong Public School

Alarmed by the critically endangered status of the Megalong Valley bottlebrush, a flower only found within a 10 kilometre range of their school, the students at Megalong Valley Public School have taken it upon themselves to protect the native species. The flower is at high risk of extinction as a result of land clearing and climate change. But by procuring seeds from private lands across the Megalong Valley and growing them at the school, the kids and their teachers share the story with the broader community to help spread the word of the importance of this special species. Not only that, the kids have creating a short film on the project and the significance of the species. Which is pretty impressive for a school with just 10 students.
