Sourcing Fresh Food in the City Landscape
Discover how possible it is to source fresh food in the city landscape. This trip will introduce you to innovative ideas on how to use city and urban spaces to grow organic food. First you will visit the Mini Farm Projects, hosted by one of their volunteers, Green Dean. This is a charity-based organisation converting under-utilised spaces into urban farms to grow food for those in need. The food is produced by and donated to homeless through food relief agencies and local charities including Caboolture Community Action. Next we will take a trip to The Food Connect Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation catalysing the new creative food system by supporting social enterprises; initiating and implementing farm and farmer support programs and promoting conscious food choices through applied research. We will explore ways to connect primary producers directly with city markets, keen for healthy, quality food options.
Our last stop will visit one of the inner city’s newest community gardens with an afternoon tea at Milton Community garden. This dedicated local community have embraced the ethic of Landcare to provide the opportunity to the broader community to become stewards of the land. Situated behind the historic Milton State School these gardens grow food that they give back to the community, have a community composting hub and have recently included a community library. They are embracing the greening of Brisbane city by building people’s understanding of how they can invite nature and the heart of the land into their homes and live more sustainably. With a strong community of Apartment dwellers Milton Community garden is planning vertical gardens and workshops to demonstrate how to grow food in small spaces and places. Every single thing in the garden has been repurposed, supporting the groups strong ethic of reuse and recycling
