The Larrakia Rangers are a long-running, urban-based Aboriginal ranger group responsible for managing the Darwin Harbour Clean-up.
When Larrakia Rangers began to project manage the Darwin Harbour Clean-Up, they only had volunteers from professional organizations – the public and school students were not involved. Rangers believed that by educating the community, they could have a more positive impact on the future of the Harbour.
Over the course of the last 3 years, an estimated 4.6 ton of waste has been removed, 565 volunteers involved and around 314 kilometers of coast/land cleaned. Many volunteers were Indigenous school students from The Stars and Clontarf Foundations’, drastically increasing young people’s awareness of the impacts of marine waste and the importance of caring for our environment through picking up our rubbish.
