Before 2003, little was known or documented of Flatback turtle activities on local town beaches around Port Hedland. In 2004, Care For Hedland Environmental Association vounteers began a monitoring and conservation program specifically for flatback turtles.
Their efforts have enabled a solid baseline of information to be developed and massively increased local community awareness through monitoring nesting and hatchling sites, conducting tours, distributing awareness raising information and conducting a successful education program.
There would be no Flatback turtles still nesting today, in Port Hedland, if not for the Association’s long-term efforts, intervention, continued monitoring and public education.
